So, 2018 was crazy AF. I didn’t even watch the year in review shows because I did not want to spend any additional time reflecting on that year. There were some highlights, one of my favorites being the Royal Wedding. I thought it would be fun to share some of my goals and thoughts on how I would like 2019 to pan out. One of the most surprising things for me going into 2019 is how few goals I have going into the year. Most years are unnecessarily complex and have a ton of moving parts going into them. For me, 2019 is pretty straightforward in terms of what I want to make happen: money, lose weight, and start dating again. I’m happy to say that I am consistently making passive income, so now I’m working to grow it. I did lose a nice amount of weight…until the election stressed me out and I stress ate it back on. And, I’ve begun meeting some really nice guys. My friend Sandy from Yes, I Am Cheap has seen pictures so she can verify LOL!! I would love to spend another year chilling out at home, but now is not the time for that.

Show Notes
I’m always excited at the beginning of the New Year-some years more than others. I won’t lie when I say that I was more than happy to see the backend of 2018. And, the past couple of years have tired me out for reasons that I’m not interested in getting into.
I spent the last 6 weeks of November working on my plan for 2019. For the last couple of years I’ve found myself ridiculously exhausted from November through December. Election years are NOT good for my mojo. This year was exceptionally challenging and my results at the end of the year reflect it.
2019-Business
- 10 Month Year-I am no longer interested in pretending that I have any interest in working the last two months of the year. I don’t. So, I’ve taken that into account as I work through my goals.
- 10x my goals
- $250,000 in earnings….am I crazy? Probably!
- But, why not have this goal?
- What if I make half of this goal? That’s a great result!
- I would like to experience the discomfort and excitement of working towards (and achieving) big goals
- In 2018 I built out 7 streams of income (5 that I’ve actually made money with)
- Affiliate Income
- Course Sales
- Books
- Freelance Writing
- Sponsorships
- Money on the Mountain Retreat
- AirBnB Rentals
- I figured out how much I need to make with each stream of income-taking into account the fact that I’m focusing on my 10 month year.
- Email opt-ins and Marketing
- Batching my work-You would think that this would be easy to do…it’s not hard, but, it’s not easy. The truth is, I’m sick of scrambling each week. Now that I’ve begun making money each month and understand the logic for PASSIVE INCOME, I am very focused on doing everything that I can to use systems that keep me focused and achieve results.
- All podcasts for the next 3-4 months are basically done
- Blog posts for the next 3 months are all on the editorial calendar written or in draft mode.
- Romance novels-basic outlines have been created and are on the editorial calendar.
- Non-Fiction books-basic outlines have been crated and are on the editorial calendar.
- Refine and
Switching Gears
- Payoff remaining unsecured debt. My goal was to get this done by the end of 2018. That didn’t happen. But, it’s very likely that I will get this done by the end of January/mid-February. I spent a ton of time resting so that I am ready to rock and roll at the beginning of the month.
- Focus on wellness-On Thanksgiving I hurt my back. Like…REALLY hurt my back. It took a month to recover and was super frightening. As I lay down, walked, and tried to maneuver around I become painfully aware of how much I’ve neglected myself in certain ways.
- Time to lose the weight!
- Self-care rituals-I used to do the following
- Steam my face
- Get mani-pedis
- Buy flowers
- Somewhere along the way…the rituals got lost as I focused on taking action. No longer! They are non-negotiable
- Clothing-So….I miss my fashionable self. Now, I don’t miss my broke fashionable self. But, I do miss having pretty clothes, shoes, etc. In fact, I dressed up for an event and one of my FinCon friends was shocked that I was wearing a dress. It was at that moment that I knew that things had to change. New clothes are now in my budget. This is also non-negotiable.
Events and Travel
After taking a year off from travel, I’m back at it! To answer a few questions that I’ve been asked:
- Did I have FOMO? Nope! If you had a chance to listen to my 2018 Recap, I detail why that is.
- I saw a TON of people from FinCon and other communities that I belong to.
- Was super busy
- Attending the following:
- PopUp Business School!
- Denver Startup Week
- Fuel Your Influence Conference
- Cents Positive Retreat
- Filmed 3 television segments! One was local and two were national
- PBS NewsHour-Most watched video for PBSNewsHour
- Local Fox TV Segment
- National Segment (it has been filmed) am waiting for it to go live before I share it.
- I also visited Breckenridge 3 times this past fall.
Now, let’s talk travel and events that I’m currently (tentatively) scheduled to attend.
- Visit Grandma!! I will be visiting my Grandma A LOT more often. I love her so much and I want to spend a ton of time with her.
- Lola Retreat LA-I’m very seriously thinking about attending. I really loved the inaugural Lola Retreat in Portland. The only issue is timing. As I will begin the kitchen part of my remodel in February it might not be the best time to go.
- Cents Positive-Retreat for women in the F.I.R.E. Community-I loved this event and am interested in attending another one. Am waiting to see where it will be held and the timing.
- FinCon19-Am so excited to attend!!! It has been a lifetime since I’ve been in Washington, D.C. can’t wait. I am pitching a panel idea…am crossing my fingers. September! I miss MY PEOPLE!
- PM19 (Podcast Movement)-So excited! A friend and I have put together a pretty kickass panel for it. Really looking forward to it. Heading to Orlando, Florida. Sad that it’s not next to the ocean. Might need to hope over to Miami afterwards to get some Cuban coffee or a night out dancing. August!
- Elevate Event-This is an event being developed by Sandy Smith for Personal Finance Influencers of Color. I do know when and where it’s going to be! Am so excited. Will wait to share additional details until Sandy announces everything. May!
- 20Books to 50K-Edinburgh, Scotland event-Something keeps calling me to go to Scotland. For the past couple of years. This event may be thing that gets me back to Europe. The tricky part is that I’m hoping to have my condo renovations done by the end of May so that I can AirBnB my place while I’m gone. I’m hoping to take my mom to Europe for at least a week or two during that trip. We shall see. July!
- Money on the Mountain Retreat-My retreat! For women who are financially single. Am so excited! I am hosting this event in my hometown of Denver, Colorado. October! Click the following link for more information and to buy tickets: michelleismoneyhungry.com/retreat
I’m 100% disinterested in doing anything that will mess up all of the hard work that I’ve put into my projects in 2018. Batching my work is especially important given the itinerary that I’m working with. So, I spent WEEKS getting ahead for 2019. Already tired AF. But, it was worth all of the hard work.
Color and Word of the Year
Red and Money! Throughout my life I’ve been drawn to different colors as an expression of my mood. For the past couple of years my color has been an aqua blue reminiscent of the sea. In the fall, I became obsessively drawn to the color red. A deep, rich vibrant color red.
Red in many cultures symbolizes good luck, passion, love, and a vibrant energy. As I’m writing romances, am feeling intensely positive energy, I’m not surprised by the fact that I’m being drawn to this color.
Money
Cardi B just dropped a new song *and not safe for work video called) “Money.” She baldly states why she wants and needs it. I’m going to just be very clear about my goals in 2019-earn more money.
Money on the Mountain Retreat
For women who are financially single! I am so excited to host this event in my hometown of Denver, Colorado.

Thinking About Starting a Blog?
I love blogging! It has been an incredible experience, transformed my life, and connected me with a ton of amazing people. Blogging is a pretty cheap activity and I recommend hosting your blog with Siteground. Many bloggers have begun leaving HostGator and BlueHost and moving to Siteground. Myself included! Read why I’m leaving HostGator and BlueHost (I have 2 blogs one on each hosting platform) and moving to Siteground. If you’re a new blogger Siteground will cost around $3.95 a month (depending on the size of your audience). They have great customer service and tutorials on how to host your new WordPress blog on Siteground
Online Business Resources
If you’re thinking about starting an online business, the resources below are a great way to get started.
- The Ultimate List of FinCon Community Products
- Courses
- Books
- Swag
- Make Money with Ebooks–There is more than one way to make money with your writing skills. I’ve created this course to help inspire, educate, and support writers who are sitting on a book idea…and are afraid to write it. This is YOUR year. Make Money with Ebooks is offered at three different tiers to meet different student needs.
- Self-Study
- Group Program-Includes access to the closed Facebook Group and twice a month live office hours.
- VIP Program-Includes access to the closed Facebook Group, twice a month live office hours, and 2 meetings with Michelle to work on book related strategies, goals, etc.
- IMark Interactive–Grayson Bell helps me with all of my website related tech issues and he is THE go to guy for WordPress related tech in the several different blogging niches (all the Personal Finance peeps work with him).
- Making Sense of Affiliate Income-If you’re looking to make affiliate income with your blog, Michelle Schroeder-Gardner’s course is the course that I recommend. She makes well over a $1 Million a year blogging and the biggest chunk of her income comes from affiliate marketing.
- $10KVA–Are you curious about becoming a Virtual Assistant as a side-hustle or a potential full-time gig? My friend Kayla Sloan is killing it as a Virtual Assistant and schooling other entrepreneurs in how to become a VA that earns on average $10KVA. This course is what I recommend as the first part of creating a virtual assistant business.
- Elite Blog Academy-Many bloggers have gone through this course and I consider this course the “Granddaddy” of all blogging courses. It’s not cheap, but in additional to getting all of the resources that are key to building an incredible blog, you’re also become a part of an insanely supportive (and huge) community of bloggers. Many of whom are making crazy money.

Dang no wonder you’re tired! You have SO much going on! lol! Sorry to hear about the garden but glad you found a nice compromise. I love the money on the mountain retreat btw. Hope it’s a success. I won’t be at Lola in LA BUT I will probably be in LA at that time looking for an apt, so I hope to see some people. The other Lola retreat is in Seattle and you said you were thinking of going to Seattle so just an FYI. I’m on a panel there. Good luck with all your goals this year and pace yourself! Hope to see you sometime this year!
