I don’t know why but people connect frugality with pain. In fact, people seem to feel that patience isn’t a virtue when it comes to applying frugality to your daily life. There have been certain moments where I did feel that way as well.
Those were the moments when it was unclear to me what my “why” was. Why was I applying frugal habits and practices to my daily life? I now have very clear goals in mind with very specific action items in place so that I understand that I’m moving towards outcomes that will benefit me in the long run.
At this point my frugality is second nature and I find that I have a lot of fun trying to do as much as I possibly can, while spending as little money as possible. Now let’s be clear, I’m not cheap: if I go out I tip 20%, I still travel, and I have a daily coffee. But, I work hard and it doesn’t make sense to me to pay full price for anything anymore. There is always a deal to be had. So, to help you embrace the frugal life I’ve come up with a list that I think you will find pretty helpful.
Frugal lifestyles don’t have to be painful-you just have to apply some creativity to your process. YOLO!
21 Ways To Live Frugally and Not Feel Any Pain
- National Parks Rock! Instead of going on a huge vacation out of state, go on a staycation to a national park. Colorado has a number of fabulous parks and every single U.S. state that I’ve been to has gorgeous scenery. For example: White Sands National Park (New Mexico) Yellowstone National Park (Wyoming/Montana/and..) Basically, Google your state and figure out the park that works best for you and then GO!
- Ride Your Bike Around Town While-Dress Cute! Ladies where a nice dress with a floppy hat, gents a nice shirt and a bowtie. Explore your city and end up at a cheap happy hour with 2 for 1 specials. Make sure it’s a cheap happy hour with excellent food. Have a $25 for the two of you and enjoy. I have a cruiser bike that I’m in love with.
- Free Museum-Does your museum have a free day or night? Why aren’t you going. It’s highly likely that your taxes paid for it.
- Volunteer To Help A Race-I’ve volunteered for free entrance to run a 5k. These races take a lot to put together. Before race season starts look at your favorites and see if they have opportunities to volunteer in exchange for the entrance fee.
- Volunteer at a Dance Studio-I used to volunteer at a dance studio in exchange for free dance classes. In fact, I volunteered so much I also ended up working at the studio and then teaching dance classes as well. It was one of the best barter situations that I’ve ever participated in.
- Volunteer at a Yoga Studio-This is also on my list for when I return to Denver. Yoga is expensive! Both Tonya from Budget and the Beach and Mrs. Frugalwoods from Frugalwoods volunteer in exchange for yoga. Nice!
- Go To A Parade-I love a good parade. I bet there is a St. Patrick’s Day Parade in everyone’s future. Why aren’t you going?
- Sample Wines-I love a nice wine. And, before I can make an educated purchase I need to sample a few. Luckily, most wine shops will sample their wines once a week. Don’t be lame, if you sample try to purchase a bottle at least once a month for a nice dinner in.
- Sample Cheese-Umm, cheese pairs well with wine and most cheese shops will have samples of the different varieties that they carry. Again, don’t be lame and do purchase a nice cheese eventually.
- Sample Chocolate-Ok, there is a theme here! But, I know that I’ve had some great chocolate samples as well. With the last three list items just have a maximum amount you’re allowed to spend to keep it frugal and stick to your plan.
- Redeem Your Groupon-Have you looked at your deals lately? Even if the promotional price has expired you can still redeem your Groupon or LivingSocialDeal for the amount that you originally paid for several years after the initial purchase. I would strongly recommend to not wait years. Just look at those deals every 4-6 weeks and redeem your coupons.
- Themed Potluck-We just had the Super Bowl which I consider the ultimate themed potluck. There are so many ways to rock a potluck. Look at Pinterest to find some awesome ideas. Make a punch with a “punch” to cut down on costs
- Redeem Points-Earned on mileage cards for gift cards to places that you enjoy
- Scavenger Hunt-Pick a random theme and create a scavenger hunt through your city. Have a prize (or dinner) at the end. I just saw this on The Big Bang Theory.
- Discover Your City’s Libraries-I am a library nerd. In fact, I am typing this from the Sydney Downtown library which is gorgeous. Have you visited your town’s different library branches? Depending on where they are located there may be special collections housed in different branches, art, or events to go to.
- Library Events-Your library probably hosts events. Recently I stumbled on an event at a local library branch that was fantastic. There was a quartet from the Colorado Symphony that was performing and they also had local coffee and snacks for those of us listening.
- Local Sports Teams-Do your local sports teams offer discounted tickets? The Denver Nuggets used to offer same day tickets for $5. Yes, they were in the 3rd level. But, it was still a great time and it was only FIVE BUCKS! Most teams won’t advertise these deals. So, just ask. And, these deals won’t be for premier games. It doesn’t matter-it’s still a lot of fun.
- Check Out Your City’s Public Art-Colorado has a lot of very interesting art that also has conspiracy theorists in a tizzy. You are first greeted with Blucifer. You know, the giant blue stallion with blood red eyes right outside of Denver International Airport? Find your city’s art and then google the story behind it. You’ll probably be surprised at what you discover.
- Themed Movie Nights-Have a theme, dress up, and go from there. My favorite themes for me personally would be 80’s night, 90’s angst, and Action Movies. If you do action movies all fake weaponry should not be worn outside-EVER.
- Clothing Swaps-Maybe you don’t feel like shopping for clothes but your friends have great stuff. Organize a clothing swap and swap some fun items.
- Go Camping-This one is tricky if you don’t have equipment. Just ask around and see if your friends have a tent/sleeping bags/etc. And then go to one of those parks I mentioned earlier. I love camping and it’s always an adventure.

I love blogging! It has been an incredible experience, transformed my life, and connected me with a ton of amazing people. Blogging is a pretty cheap activity and I recommend hosting your blog with Siteground. Many bloggers have begun leaving HostGator and BlueHost and moving to Siteground. Myself included! Read why I’m leaving HostGator and BlueHost (I have 2 blogs one on each hosting platform) and moving to Siteground. If you’re a new blogger Siteground will cost around $3.95 a month (depending on the size of your audience). They have great customer service and tutorials on how to host your new WordPress blog on Siteground.

I still can’t figure out how you can ride a bike in a dress! That’s super skillful! 🙂 California, and LA in general has a plethora of free or cheap things to do (if you don’t mind driving to get there). I love all the free concerts that are available in the summer, and of course you can’t beat the beach! It may not be cheap rent, but you can still be frugal here.

I ride my bike a lot while wearing a dress TEHE! It just can’t be too long. I have a ton of other cool options for another list but I also love the free concerts that we have here! Nope, you can’t beat the beach. I just did a meetup last night where we walked along the coast.

I love the biking with a floppy hat idea! I’m thinking of starting a suburban ladies’ night with my friends and this would be awesome.
Michelle says
This one is fun because there is nothing better than looking cute and then going out. Be careful of riding after drinking-am totally serious.

These are some really great ideas. I try to take advantage of the library and free museum days. I definitely need to check out some national parks though in the spring because I plan on doing a staycation instead of traveling somewhere this year. I love to check out free movies screenings in my area, even if they’re old 🙂 I love theatre and plays but sometime they are so expensive but the frugal solution is to check out high school and college theatre productions.
Michelle says
The national parks are amazing! You may want to see if there is a lottery for tickets for the same day. They do that here for certain productions and the tickets are discounted. I had forgotten about the high school/college productions which are usually pretty good.

These are great ideas, thanks so much for posting this! I am a big beach or lake person – pack a picnic, play in the water and get some sun is one of my favorite things to do!
Michelle says
Love that, I live by a big lake and people always have a nice picnic throughout the year. There’s even paddle boats and bikes for several people to ride at the same time.

Being frugal definitely isn’t about being cheap, it’s about putting your $$$ where you’ll get the best/most value.
My frugal favourite is definitely the library! LOVE the library!!! As it happens I’m off to an event next week – “Romance Fiction is like a Box of Chocolates”. I don’t write romance fiction but I love to hear authors talk about their work. And, it’s FREE!
Michelle says
I think people really get stuck on frugal=cheap vs. frugal=value for time and money. I wish I could go to the romance fiction event=it sounds awesome. AND-I read romance novels 🙂
Diane says
Hi Michelle,
Thought I’d give you a quick update on ‘Romance Fiction is Like a Box of Chocolates’ – it was a wonderful (and inspiring) talk given by two local and award winning authors. Really got me thinking. And… it was FREE! 🙂
Cheers
Michelle says
Thanks for the update! I’ve always thought about writing a romance novel. Hopefully my library will do something like that soon!

I agree — my life is pretty luxurious because I aim for free and very cheap events mostly, while occasionally going big for something really interesting. It helps that I live in a college town; amazing classic films for $6, and this weekend I’m going to a really fancy dinner out for $8.
Michelle says
One of the previous commenters talked about the concept of value. If I get the same thing for less-classic film isn’t that still the same? I love that you’re going to an $8 frugal dinner.
thesingledollar says
It’s really cool! It’s like a round robin thing where various really good cooks make gourmet dinners and pass the hat to basically cover ingredients.
Michelle says
Oh! I love that idea and I plan on trying it out!

College events are fabulous! Great talent at a fraction of the professional cost. We have a number of creative centers nearby and I love it!
Michelle says
Having worked at a college forever I can say that college events ROCK!! One of my student assistants treated me to a John Legend Concert on our campus. My ticket was $5-he sang to me the whole time. Really. He did!

LOL!

I love the idea of any wine and cheese sampling!

Those are 2 of my favorite things to do.

I love this list. Having just moved to a new city, I’m slowly but surely starting to find and enjoy the free stuff to do. I’ve started with parks and am loving them! The weather has been perfect lately 🙂
Michelle says
New cities are FUN!! I just got lost yesterday and had to figure out what the heck I was doing. The parks are always a great place to start exploring.
Toni @ Debt Free Divas says
I really like the idea of volunteering to offset race fees. Definitely going to look at that. I’m not an avid runner yet, but if you are those fees can really add up – especially if you are like me and wait until the last minute. Volunteering goes a long way to offset fees – theaters, conferences, special performances are additional areas to volunteer in exchange for free entrance! Great piece.
Michelle says
I’ve done it a couple of times before and it’s usually pretty easy to do and the group you’re working with is usually a lot of fun to work with. You just have to have a good idea of what races you want to participate in and look at the websites as early as possible. The volunteer spots go really quickly
Simply Save says
Great list! I’m actually volunteering at a 5k tomorrow! I’m looking forward to getting out and enjoying the weather while helping out a charity!
Michelle says
I love volunteering! But, I love to volunteer and the best gigs are the ones where I get to participate in the event as well. So, I try to volunteer so that I can participate.
