“That will be $85 dollars!” Chirped the helpful sales associate with the distracting lip ring and bubbly personality.
“Of course it is.” I said with a deadpan voice.
This wasn’t my first rodeo. I’ve spent more time in that Apple Store than I would care to think about. In fact, every since I purchased my MAC I’ve stopped by the store often enough that one of the associates gave me a power crystal. Seriously. He told me that I was the first person he’d given one to, but I had a really good aura.
I still have it.
But, I digress. So, my eye drifted anxiously back to painful lip ring girl and I asked her if it would be possible to get a new charger without the overseas adapter. Because I would have 3 with this purchase. Three.
“Nope!” she chirped. So, I glared at the other two slightly bitchy associates who had told her to help me.
Why Am I So Annoyed With Apple?
Because I’ve spent more time trouble shooting problems and being talked down to be slightly snotty Apple Associates than I did in the almost 6 years of owning my p.c. When I purchased my MAC, I did it with the intention of keeping it for as long as it worked. Like, for 7 years and then upgrade whenever it broke.
It’s becoming clear to me, though, that this might not happen. That the very large amount of money that I spent on this computer may have been a foolish decision. But, this isn’t the only Apple product that is draining my wallet of money. My beloved Ipod is also an issue. Why?
- Earbuds
- Music
I obviously feel compelled to purchase new music and upload it to my Ipod. I don’t download music illegally (don’t know how, and I don’t feel that’s a good thing to do) so I am stuck going to the Itunes store and buying whatever cool music that I’ve shazammed in the past week.
That adds up.
Then, there is the ongoing issue of earbuds. Without earbuds, there is no Ipod. I absolutely love my Ipod!!! I’ve had it for at least 4 or 5 years and it’s still going strong. What I don’t love is that the original cost has doubled since the initial purchase. And, if you factor in apps that i might want to use on my laptop (and would need to purchase) the cost of my computer has also grown more than what I originally paid for it.
Apple is a money sucking vampire. Now, my three year warranty is up and I will have to pay for whatever services I need to have done-like figuring out why OS X now keeps me from opening up PicMonkey and my photos in Chrome but still works in Explorer. In fact, I spent a number of hours looking at videos and trying to fix the problem. The thing that sucks about that is I’m not being paid for my time by Apple to fix my computer’s technical problems.
My rates would be pretty high.

I enjoy my iPhone immensely. But give me an Apple product with a mouse and I’m useless – I can’t operate the thing for the life of me. As far as money goes, I have paid for a total of one app in my several years of having this thing. If it’s not free, I don’t have it. I also rely on pandora for music. Likely not the latest and greatest. But then again I’m old (31 to be exact) and am pretty comfortable with the same stuff.
Talking about those fabulous folks in the store, you should hear the 50+ co-worker of Mr. Maroon rant about the punks on a power trip because they get to label themselves as a ‘genius’!!

I don’t have an Iphone because I drew the line after getting the MAC. I don’t have a mouse, but wish that I did!! I love Pandora…can I stream that on my Ipod? Or, is that only if you’re using the Iphone? I don’t think 31 is old btw! Tehe! The young lady was very nice, but I’ve had some frustrating experiences there where I was talked down to and it was so irritating because where else can I go for APPLE specific support when I am rocking the warranty.

I love my iPod, but that´s where I draw the line. I´ve had it since 2006 (yeah, you read that right!) and it still works like a charm! There have been 0 additional costs since I purchased it.
Having worked at a cellphone company for many years now, I would probably never get an iPhone since they´re so so limited in what they can do, compared to Androids.
And I would definitely never get a Mac unless I were into something like video editing. I have a little laptop that I received as a gift (but probably wasn´t too expensive) in 2009. Yep. Still works fine. All I really do is browse the web, type blogs and emails, and look at spreadsheets. No need for a visual powerhouse (or the pricetag that comes with it) like a Mac. When this little laptop dies (which doesn´t even look like it´ll be soon) I´ll probably find another $300-400 laptop to get the job done. Much less painful that way!

I love my IPOD too and it was worth the money. My MAC….not so much. I am hoping that it will last as long as I hoped it would when I originally purchased it. I’ve also decided to make sure that I learn how to use every single cool system that’s on here. But, first-I need my freaking internet to work. Am going to have a nervous breakdown about that too.

I have been an Iphone user for years and I just love Apple, though it is really expensive. But it’s worth it because of its specs, interface, use. I just wish it were cheaper! By the way, it took me some time to fully maximize what it is used for, those specs are hard to learn.

There is a lot of computing capacity that I’m not using. So my goal is to spend some time looking at all of the computing possibilities and then learn them-and use them.

I avoid the Apple store because I always feel like they’re condescending in there. I have a classic iPod that’s thankfully never given me any troubles (though the first iPod I’ve ever had no longer works – that was about 2007). I’ve owned an iPhone before and that was fine.
I made the decision to get a Macbook last year for the same reason as you – I figured it would last long enough to justify the cost. I even ordered a refurbished one to save on costs. Nothing has gone wrong thus far, but I always research before updating the OS or any apps since they’re prone to breaking. I also have an iPad, which has slowed down a lot since getting it and has a finicky wifi connection.
Overall, even though that’s a lot of products, I’m not partial to PC or Mac. My dad is really handy when it comes to repairing computers, so I have a PC desktop I work at on a normal basis, just in case anything goes wrong. I’m sorry you’ve run into so many issues. =(

I was wondering if I was the only person who felt that way! I am glad that you said that because I do feel like either I’ talked down to OR I get amazing service. Never anything in between. I make some inappropriate jokes about my MAC-will share those with you if you come to FinCon 🙂

I am on my second apple Iphone and I desperately want the Iphone 6 but too cheap to pay $588 for a new phone. I’m hoping that when I get back to the states it will be cheaper. I love, love Apple products but I have to admit, that the products just look sleek and cool, but the added expenses is ridiculous and I wish I wasn’t hooked.

Since I have the MACBook Air, I decided against getting the phone. Now I’m rocking Republic Wireless!! I love it and it meets my phone needs. Have you seen the commercial for the watch yet??
Toni @ Debt Free Divas says
I don’t have any. Never had.I’ve always assumed when I got a little more serious about some visual tools (graphics or video projects) I’d make the transition. Now, I just bum computer time whenever I need to do anything serious from a friend…or go hide out in DePaul’sl computer lab. They have an open one on the top floor for some reason. Since I’m such a late adopter I generally get the benefit of years and years of other people’s experience before I make a choice. See now, you’ve just convinced me that I should be happy with my Android phone and free apps (just have to ignore the ads).
Michelle says
I am in general a late adopter (got a flat screen last year). But, once my old pc died after 6 years I felt that it would be a good investment. I knew that I would use this computer in the same way, but I have been frustrated by some of the “hidden” costs like $85 power cords. That’s not cheap. I have a Republic Wireless phone and even though it can be quirky from time to time I really like it.

I’ve been looking for a Mac to replace my PC, but now I’m wondering if it is worth it. I go to an Apple reseller for help with our iPad and iPod. They are great and don’t talk down so I think I’ll avoid the Apple store.
Michelle says
Tre-I think my specific MAC has issues. But, I DO think that the MAC product line is way too expensive. So, I think it’s great that you’re looking at a reseller.
