When I typed the title for this podcast, I kind of giggled. Never in a million years did I expect an unexpected side-project to the personal finance brand that I was building would affect my mind and my wallet in the way that it did. I currently call myself a digital content creator versus blogger or podcaster. Why? Because I create written content, podcasts, events, and run a course. The past year has been incredibly challenging both personally and professionally. And, I’m forever thankful to that first smutty novel that I wrote because it changed my personal finance business forever.

Show Notes
- What happened in 2018 really goes back to 2017 and feeling like I was spinning my wheels with my business.
- Nothing was working or gaining traction and it was really frustrating.
- I decided to experiment and try out different things.
- I wrote a romance book and used the pen name Autumn Stone
- I tried coaching-I’m good at it…but, I didn’t enjoy it at that moment in time.
- I built out a course.
- Focused more on affiliate income
- Everything had various degrees of success
- The romance book just sparked my imagination for several reasons.
- I earned money so quickly
- I could write as many books as possible.
- It was fun
- Then, I built a course the same month
- Because I’m crazy. But, it was a smart decision.
- How these decisions changed my personal finance business and what you can learn from it for yours!
- Observation #1-If you’re thinking about creating products-DO IT! And, begin working on them now. It has taken literally a year to work through my first couple of cohorts to learn the following.
- My teaching style
- What the students really want-it’s usually different than you think.
- The ideal price point for your product and your product’s sweet spot.
- Observation #2-Most people under-market their products. Including myself. Whether you’re selling books, coaching, courses, or connecting people with your favorite affiliates, you likely have to push harder to get people in front of your products that you expect.
- Observation #3-You can sell your products without Facebook or AMS (Amazon) ads, then there is a point when you need to. And, mastering how to sell what you have without ads is a huge skillset that will serve you well.
- Observation #4-Creating my own products and having them sell at various price points was a WIN. And, it changed my confidence level.
- Observation #5-My romance email list taught me how to email my personal finance list without selling. Emailing your list can be really hard. And, I could never really get “the hang” of creating conversational emails that connected me to the people on my list. It just felt so hard. Maybe because of the subject are that I was positioned in? I just found that I was afraid to email my list and that I had an incredibly difficult time growing my personal finance list. In case you’re wondering-I email my romance list twice a week and they email me back as soon as the newsletter hits their boxes. My open rates range between 25-30% for my newsletters. You have to build your list and talk to them. It’s like dating, would you be interested in someone who shows up once a month for a booty call?
- Observation #6-Even the smallest amount of money will validate what you’re doing. To YOU and to the people around you. And tracking that income growth is the key to everything.
- Observation #7 If the problem that you solve is clear, you can position yourself as the “go to” person for solving said problem in your online community.
- Observation #8 Passive Income is addicting and everyone should build it into their business. You have to build in a revenue stream that you completely “own.” This is basically the equivalent of building “FU” money into your business. The more you build it into your business, the more freedom you will have in your business.
- Observation #9-Pay attention to your transferable skills. I love writing. I just didn’t enjoy freelance writing because of all of the uncertainty. I almost always had great clients, but it would always take longer than I liked to go from pitch/yes/deadline.
- Observation #10-Perfectionism kills dreams. Don’t worry about being perfect.
