***Short and sweet***
The other day I found myself wondering what happened to the 52 Week Savings Challenge? In fact, I wondered about all of the other gimmicks that have been thought of. The $5 dollar savings challenge, No Shopping Challenge, the shop your pantry project, and the list goes on. I admit that I’ve done more than my fair share of savings challenges and to my surprise I’ve had some slight glimmers of success. I was beginning to have my doubts. As I look in the rear view mirror and look at the tail end of this year I’m amazed at how much dealing with my money is a mental game.
This is the first year in a long time where (knock on wood) I feel like my finances are slowly getting under control. While I didn’t do the 52 Week Challenge, the year long No Shopping Challenge that I am still in the process of doing has yielded me extra money that enabled me: to take my mom to New York City for Labor Day weekend and go the U.S. Open, pay off 2 credit cards, I will paying off a credit card (hopefully) on Black Friday, and I am getting stuff out of storage! The power of a good savings gimmick is that gives you something to focus on that has an obvious end result-saving money.
I am encouraging people who are trying to change their financial lives to find a gimmick that doesn’t involve random credit cards or creating debt. Find a gimmick that encourages you to practice finding money, save money, and think about your money habits.
Find your gimmick and then when you get bored with it, or feel like it isn’t working find another one.
Savings gimmicks work.
Do you use a savings gimmick? Has it worked for you?
Are there any that you recommend?

I don’t have any savings gimmicks at the moment. But I definitely think the 52 weeks saving challenge is interesting.
Now I want to come up with a gimmick before the new year begins 🙂

I thought the 52 Week Challenge was pretty interesting too. I was wondering how people were doing with it but I hadn’t heard any follow up comments/posts. If you think up a gimmick let me know.

I haven’t found a savings gimmick that works. Mine seems to be slow and steady wins the race. 🙂

I have to agree. I like how gimmicks hook you in and get you going. I guess that’s why I like some savings gimmicks.
