I’m taking a SHORT break from using technology. I use the computer every day at work and for blogging. I am exhausted. I won’t be tweeting, on Facebook, or answering emails for the next few days. All blog comments will “Go Live” on January 1, 2014
For the Americans who are wondering what the heck is Boxing Day? It is the day after Christmas when our British peeps get a day off. It also seems like a big shopping day as well. I spoke with my BFF who is British about what she thinks about Boxing Day. She loves it!
Boxing Day is fairly similar to the U.S.’s Black Friday where people go shopping in droves and stretch their money as far as they can.
Having lived in Europe I can tell you that these shopping deals are a big deal! Consumers in the U.S. are really spoiled because we have very inexpensive goods and services all throughout the year. We are already purchasing items at a lower price point on a regular basis and have access to a number of discount options such as coupons, online discount codes, and doorbuster deals.
I remember living in France and almost NEVER shopping because everything was so expensive for me. I also found myself puzzled at the fact that there weren’t any sales. Then one day there were “SOLDES” signs everywhere. The discounts were for 20%-30% nothing higher and that was a big deal.
If you’re planning to go shopping on Boxing Day I wonder if you have a strategy so that you can get all that you’re looking for and to stretch your money as much as you can.
Here are some tips:
- Set a budget
- Use cash-credit/debit cards will make you spend like a fool on a day like today!
- Sleep in-THEN go shopping. You will be well rested and relaxed.
- Wear comfortable (flat) shoes.
- Eat! And bring a snack.
- Take a break when you get tired.
- Don’t go crazy. Pace yourself.
- Have fun. When it stops being fun-stop shopping. NO MATTER WHAT.
Good luck!

Yes I do. It’s the only day in Canada worth getting stuff on sale. We managed to save about $150 on things we were going to buy anyway.

It’s only a matter of time before U.S. retailers decide that Boxing Day is something to market to U.S. consumers. Black friday craziness is more than enough for me though. I can’t go through it twice in one holiday season.
