I am unapologetically nerdy. I love Firefly/Serenity and old episodes of Star Trek. I love thinking about dark matter and the CERN Super Conductor Collider. So, when I say I’m nerdy I wear my nerdom proudly.
I Also Like Money
The thing is, liking money and knowing how to actually manage money are two different things. Which is why I am 4 years into my debt freedom journey and still am figuring things out. I’m closer to understanding my “why’s with money” than when I started. I attribute this my money transformation to hard work and my obsessive (tehe) connection with FinCon.
What Is FinCon?
It is a conference for professionals working in aspects of financial services and education convene for 4-5 days of absolute networking, educational, and party mayhem. It is honestly one of the best experiences that I invest in on a yearly basis and I always get an amazing return on investment.
Put simply FinCon allows me to be surrounded by people who:
- HUSTLE-These are some of the hardest and smartest working people I’ve ever met. They work all the time. Towards their dreams, helping themselves, and helping their families and friends. They work before their regular jobs, after their regular jobs, and anytime in-between.
- Want Everyone To Be Financially Healthy-These are people who are sharing both good, bad, and everything in between stories about their money. They aren’t afraid to get metaphorically naked so that other people could learn from their mistakes and from their triumphs.
- Believe in my dreams-Really. They want me to succeed at what I dream of for myself and GIVE ME ACTION STEPS AND ADVICE to get to where I want to go in life. They even listen and understand what I’m talking about: budgets, minimalism, frugal living, credit card hacks, savings, debt, investing, tiny homes, travel, health, taxes, lifestyle design and self-employment. They get me.
- They Think BIG–Passive Income, sure, let’s try it. Live the way we dream of for ourselves. Got it. Start a movement, a tribe,or a community done. Become a millionaire, retire at 33, and become a thought leader-let’s make this happen.
- They Expect Better-From themselves and from you. Mediocre doesn’t cut it. And they take who they surround themselves with seriously. Have you heard about the idea that you are a reflection of the 5 people you spend the most time with? They believe this. So, if you’re not moving ahead…you may still be friends but they will do the slow fade. Not to be cruel, but because they are moving beyond where you’re at. This is more likely to happen with friends outside of the FinCon community.
- They Are Everywhere-Business Insider, The Penny Hoarder, Podcasts, The Globe and Mail, The Denver Post, Twitter, Periscope, Facebook, and Pinterest.
- Be a Part of a Community-Of dreamers and doers.
FinCon is a financial bloggers Comic Con. It is the epic cumulation of a year’s work of hard work, focus, and drive. It’s quit simply an event that I look forward to every single year. I learn, I push myself out of my comfort zone. I talked more than I ever could have imagined-and totally lost my voice-for days. I networked like a Rock Star. I met my amazing Mastermind Group for the first time in real life. I hung out with my friends and made new ones.
The price is more than worth it. I was able to pick up work prior to FinCon cancelled out the cost of the event. Basically, I balanced out what I paid out a week after I returned. Nice. I’m also still in the process of signing on with at least one, maybe three (keeping fingers crossed) organizations that I connected with during the conference. I also have scheduled some great podcast interviews and am excited to drop some new wisdom from these great people on my podcast Girl Gone Frugal.
So how much did I end up spending?
My Budget:
- Ticket: $149 (purchased after the 2014 event)
- Plane Ticket: $11 (mileage points)
- Ground Transportation: $23 Denver+ $40 taxi Charlotte=$63
- Food: $30
- Hotel: $461 (shared room)
- AirBnB: $50 (one night)
- Total: $764 or $615 (minus the ticket purchased last year)
This year’s FinCon was my least expensive yet and I shaved off about $500 from what I spent last year and left with a ton of: contacts, information, and swag. I had an absolutely fantastic time and was able to achieve a number of business focused goals that I had set for myself and added to my Vision Board.
If you are a finance lover and would like to connect with people who get that love, I highly recommend that you seriously consider attending next year’s FinCon.
It’s in San Diego. Getting bikini ready now.

Ha ha ha… All you need is Capt. Reynolds to show up at FinCon and life would be complete! I’d be over the moon, too!
Thanks for the reminder about the vision board. FinCon16 is going on mine. Dream big! 🙂

We met a blogger who flew in from Australia. I know that she had a very positive experience! It’s going to be in San Diego so that’s at least “closer” to you. And, yes, if Mal showed up that would be awesome.

Nice, Michelle! And I totally agree about FinCon. The freelance gigs cover the cost for me, as well. How many more days until San Diego? Definitely need to start hitting the gym now to prepare 😉
Michelle says
I was planning on hitting the gym-but now I’m even more focused. I wasn’t bikini ready for Australia LOL.

lol I love how many bloggers have mentioned getting bikini ready for next year. Could it be those three pools? 🙂 Glad you got a lot of out fincon. The jury is out on my ROI, but I always LOVE seeing my blogging friends!

The pools and the beach and I am also just over my old job weight! I got a lot out of it-but I think I talked to every single person at that conference. I love, love, love seeing my fabulous blogging friends-that’s priceless.

Nice job! I haven’t analyzed all of my spending yet, but it was a LOT more than that. (No CC points for my flight.)
Michelle says
Haha! I really wanted to keep my expenses LOW. Next year will be a lot more expensive because I might stay for 3 weeks in San Diego.

I definitely have to go to FinCon next year. That’s less than I pay for one day of CPE.
Michelle says
Do it! It’s all in the planning!I have already begun figuring out how I would like to approach the cost for next year. It will be more expensive because I would like to stay in San Diego for 2 or 3 weeks. Will keep you posted.
Jayson @ Monster Piggy Bank says
It seems like you all had fun back there at FinCon Michelle. If that is the total amount a participant can spend in this event, I’d probably go to the next Fincon!
Michelle says
Well…I worked really hard to get it to be that low. Normally I would spend around $1,100.
Toni @ Debt Free Divas says
ComicCon huh? As long as I don’t have to do costumes, I’m down LOL! Who am I kidding, I love a good dress up fest.
I think I’m just now starting to mellow back down. That was such a productivity high! Who needs chemical intoxicants…just hang out with the great folks at FinCon for a weekend. It was great to finally meet in person my friend!

I was so happy to meet you and our wonderful Mastermind in person. YES, high on life LOL! Isn’t it amazing being around people who are positive and want you to be successful? It’s pretty fantastic. See you in a couple of days-and I finally, finally got my voice back.
