At the end of 2014, I decided to take the leap. I leaped into the unknown territory of self-employment that eventually morphed into entrepreneurship. At the time I was burnt out from 10 years of commuting, working with way too many clients, and feeling frustrated by the limits on my potential professionally and personally. So, I booked a ticket to Hawaii and Australia and never looked back. I had thousands of dollars in debt and no idea what I would do next. But, it ended up being the right decision. I’ve written books, created courses, coached clients, written content for major media concerns, run my own events, and spoken at numerous conferences. None of this would have happened if I’d stayed at my old job or continued to work a full-time job for someone else. I accidentally became a Slow F.I.R.E. practitioner before I even knew what Slow F.I.R.E. was. So, when I tell you that I got a job an actual job, I’m excited to share what it is and why I said yes to an unexpected opportunity.

Show Notes
- I am the new Community Manager for the House of Pod, a unique podcasting incubator and co-working space headquartered in Denver, Colorado. House of Pod has created podcast content for organizations such as National Geographic, City of Denver, and Rocky Mountain PBS
- How I found out about the position. I financial ally and friend. My friend Melanie Lockert Founder of the Lola Retreat reached out to me a couple of weeks ago and asked if I knew that they were hiring. I literally had one day to apply.
- So, I did and one week later I was hired!
- The Community Manager position is a salaried part-time job that I will primarily work on from home. The goal is to support and grow the House of Pod community both here in Denver and online. Basically, this position allows me to use the following skillsets and interests.
- Community building-I like people
- Event organizing
- Collaborations
- Podcasting-I love podcasting and helping to uplift voices in spaces that they previously wouldn’t be heard in.
- I love Denver and the uniqueness of the space
- Online monetization strategies
- Content creation
- Passive income building
- Why I said yes
- I’m very familiar with the organization and the team and have been a mentor for the past two years for a podcast incubator program that House of Pod runs through its non-profit arm. This incubator program was for women of color.
- I LOVE podcasts and have three LOL!
- In my role I will be directing two, potentially three, incubators in 2021 and will learn the sponsorship pitching process. These are pretty significant sponsorship pitches and I’m looking forward to support new podcasters while learning that skill
- The position is self-directed.
- Most of the work will be done from home
- Creative flexibility within the position-a huge deal for me.
- Health Insurance
- Vacation pay
- Did I mention that this is a part-time position?
- This roll is a perfect compliment to my business.
- Even before COVID, I’d spent a lot of time thinking about the concept of community. In particular, my roll in whichever community that I live in. Then COVID happened and life changed. I could no longer easily hang out with people. Travel was done. And, I was sitting in my house thinking about the concept of community in the space that I was in now. Literally. This opportunity is a wonderful way for me to build deeper connections as we continue to hunker down and deal with COVID for the next year or so.
- I have the time. Recently, I audited my work hours and discovered that I was making significantly more money working very few hours. I had a lot of free time on my hands and I’m excited about this new intellectual challenge.
- We are in philosophical alignment on Black Lives Matter and other issues that I believe in and stand for.
- I still have some significant financial goals that I’m focused on.
- The role of my friend and financial ally-Melanie Lockert in connecting me with this opportunity. I’m very blessed to have a number of different people in my life who share opportunities with me, understand my strengths and weaknesses, and want me to win. I wouldn’t have known about this if she hadn’t told me about it and she lives in L.A. I’m still trying to figure out how this even got on her radar.
- Slow F.I.R.E. aside-for those of you focused on F.I.R.E. picking up a part-time position that pays benefits may be a great way to work towards your Slow F.I.R.E. lifestyle.
