I decided not to share my freelance income in Wednesday’s post because I felt that it would negate the message that I was trying to share. I wanted to be very clear that money flow is potentially the biggest problem with freelancing-or at least the most irritating.
That said I will share the amount of money that I’ve invoiced out and what I have currently received, finally I will share what is pending.
May Total Invoices and Side Hustle Income:
I should say that even with the taxes taken out if I had received all of the money that I invoiced out then I would be bringing home a more (A LOT) more than I did at my previous job. Below is the money flow for May.
I am o.k. with the money that flowed in because I started at $700 in April. So, I’m pretty pleased with my progress so far.
*Please note I have not begun focusing on all of the different ways that I would like to focus on to grow my income.
Total Earned: $5793
Total Received: $3922
Total Pending: $1871 (most likely received next week)
As long as I make at least $4000 a month I will be happy. But, I prefer to make more than that so I will begin focusing on adding a few more clients and exploring the areas that I haven’t focused on yet.

My Podcast Cometh!
Finally, I have begun taping podcasts. I didn’t love the first name I picked out which was”Michelle Talks Money.” So, I had to start from the beginning and rename it. I’m super happy with the new name and it matches where I want to go with the podcast. My first episode will be on Monday, June 8, 2015.

I haven’t read Amanda’s post yet (about to head over there and check it out), but this sounds like what happened to me at my current job. I was should up and told to ask for Person A. I waited and waited and waited and finally Person B came over. I knew there were 4 project management spots open and had talked with all 4 hiring managers on the phone, so I just assumed I would eventually meet Person A. I got a tour, a hasty interview, and Person B left me in a room to go find other people to interview me. He could only find one person, who was the chief engineer and not at all interested in what PMs do. I never met Person A. When I finally got hired on, I learned Person A had already filled his PM spot before I ever came on site for an interview!!!

It really pissed me off because I felt like there was a complete lack of respect for her and her TIME! It also sets a very negative tone if the person does get hired on. Sigh. People.

Hi Michelle,
Thank you so much for including my post in your link love!
I had no idea you were doing so well with the freelance income! Every time I watch a blogger like yourself make the leap from a day-job to freelancing, I’m so inspired that I could maybe do the same. I know there’s a lot of behind the scenes work that goes into it, which scares me, but staying at a part time minimum wage job that I hate scares me even more. Haha.
I’m not quit ready to make that big of a change yet, but the wheels in my head are spinning with how I can start to make it happen 🙂
Michelle says
I was very annoyed on your behalf! I can’t believe that they didn’t call you to communicate the change. It has been a little intense on my end because I basically started from scratch. But, you get pretty freaking motivated when you: need money, are competitive, and aren’t dating. I have a lot of time to focus on this LOL! Especially now that I’m not commuting. Feel free to email me if you have questions.

That’s a great amount for May! Thanks so much for the link love!

Thanks Tonya! Being broke really motivated me…and no social life LOL!! We’ll see how it goes this month.

Thanks for sharing Michelle! The invoicing out vs receiving is SO tough when freelancing. I’ve had times where I’ve literally been waiting on thousands of dollars. It really made me get grounded in zero sum budgeting and using my previous months income (received) to plan my next months’ expenses.
Michelle says
I really, really appreciated your post because I made a very profound change in how I’m approaching what I’m asking for, etc. I’ve also made a very big change in how I’m budgeting so that I’m taken care of!

its really helpful seeing how you’re managing the freelancing Michelle, I’ve done a bit a few years ago and am seriously thinking of working to build up a freelance business for when I retire in a few years. Its great seeing your income grow and appreciate you sharing what you’re learning..
Michelle says
Thanks Jan! It hasn’t been perfect, but it’s very clear what the potential is in terms of earnings and lifestyle. I just have to work really hard and focus.

You are such a motivated person! When I was into video-blogging I also set goals on the next month, after first 4 month it was 400$, than 500, than 700, 1000 and so on! It’s the besy method to keep motivation!
Michelle says
Thanks! It’s the only way I can meet my goals-set audacious goals and then rock them out.
