If you’ve been listening to Michelle is Money Hungry for awhile, it might surprise you to find out that the name is a rebrand. My brand used to be called something completely different. But, after many years with the old name, I decided it was time to rebrand. I’d changed quite a bit, my goals had changed and I wanted to elicit a deeper connection and response to what I was creating. So, I decided to call my new brand “Michelle Is Money Hungry” .
Why am I sharing this with you? I’ve realized that it’s been awhile since I’d shared what the name meant and why I chose something that might feel a little cringe and an embrace of the ethos “greed is good” By the way, it’s not.
In fact, I realized I might have an issue or that people might not understand that the name is a little tongue-in-cheek when a newer friend shared how she perceived the name in an offhand comment and I got a little…annoyed. In this short and quick episode, I’ve decided to reintroduce myself and what Michelle is Money Hungry is all about. It might surprise you.
In order for me to support my blogging activities, I may receive monetary compensation or other types of remuneration for my endorsement, recommendation, testimonial and/or link to any products or services from this blog. Please read my disclosure here.*

Show Notes
This month I am crowdfunding for the upcoming Michelle is Money Hungry Podcast season centered around women and the choices that have a lasting financial impact on their lives. Why crowdfund? It’s a great way to market a show, I wanted to highlight how much time it takes to create award winning audio content that serves. And advocating for fair compensation is a huge part of my brand. If you would like to support Michelle is Money Hungry-please go to the following link: https://michelleismoneyhungry.com/crowdfund and donate today.
I’m excited to share my upcoming season highlighting the decisions that American women make and how those decisions can have a long-term positive or negative impact on our money. From getting married, staying single or even deciding which state we should live in, I’m exploring how those decisions can have a long-term effect on our money.
I am so excited to share universal stories of the choices that American women make and how policy, place and politics influence our decisions whether we realize it or not.
Make sure to subscribe and share the podcast. The Turning Point in American Women’s Money Season will begin at the end of September. Until then enjoy my upcoming episodes discussing a range of different topics that have been on my mind this summer.
By the way, on the day that this episode goes “live” September 9, 2022 I’m waiting to find out if I’ve won the Plutus Award for Podcast of the Year-wish me luck! It has been a wild ride and I am so happy that you’re a part of this journey.
The Episode
I started creating content in the personal finance space 10 years ago in 2012 to be exact.
I’m actually really shocked by this as so much as happened during this time. I was burnt out, financially stressed and I wanted to share my financial story with the hope that it would be helpful at least to one other person.
- I grew up being taught to be a good person, have a great work ethic and serve. Are there those of you listening to this episode who were taught similar lessons? As a Black woman the idea of being of service in the work that you do is very deeply ingrained. Working in roles where we cared for others oftentimes to the point where caring about ourselves was last on the list.
- What I didn’t realize until much later is that this messaging was flawed. What I also didn’t realize as I struggled to gain financial footing under a mountain of debt, dealt with student loans and just what I was dealing with in my head was that part of why I felt like I was failing financially wasn’t just about me and my choices-it was the impact of policy on my life as well.
- I worked hard to pay off thousands of dollars of debt. In fact, I’ve paid off over $60,000 in really random unsecured debt. From credit cards, payday loans, personal debts and accounts in arrears. I felt frustrated that we didn’t have enough content and conversations around debt-complexity vs. the sexy stories of paying off one $60,000 loan vs. 30+ debts at the same amount. Both were just as important to do but one story seems sexier.
- Let’s be clear, I haven’t figured it all out. Money that is. It’s an ongoing process for me.
- Michelle is Money Hungry is my daily reminder to myself that it’s ok to want more and want Better for myself. The name isn’t about greed as many would think given the name. I knew that by adding “money hungry” into the name of my brand that people would apply their own biases and interpretations into what my brand is about.
- I want my listeners to feel comfortable asserting that they want MORE for themselves and that the more money they bring in will help them navigate the cost of: getting educated, general living expenses, the funding of dreams and the unexpected moments when you’re supporting others.
- My mission with Michelle is Money Hungry is to continue having nuanced and substantive financial conversations around the topics that not enough people talk about. Examples include: The Finances of a Sex Worker, Building Black Generational Wealth and Student Loan Forgiveness to name a few. I’ll share links to those episodes in the show notes.
- What you won’t find in Michelle is Money Hungry is talk about how to build an online brand-you’ll find that in my secondary project “The Brand Building Lab” where I talk about thoughtfully building online brands that lean into social good while making money at the same time.
- You won’t find me talking about Colorado on Michelle is Money Hungry because I talk about all things Colorado at Square State Colorado.
Instead, you’ll find real and nuanced conversations about the intersection of money, choice, policy and equity. Thank you for all of your support and I look forward to the next 10 years of creating content that inspires.
