It’s 8 months after I shook the Verizon shackles off and freed myself from $105 dollar a month phone bills. That translates to $1260 a year. To talk on a phone. To people that I know and see enough that really, it felt kind of stupid to pay that kind of money.
A year’s worth of phone service was a trip to Costa Rica, or money to pay off a bill, or even money that I could have invested.
I Quit Verizon
And started service with Republic Wireless instead. And like most relationships, it’s not perfect-but, things have been pretty good.
I’m really, really happy with how things have gone so far. And quit honestly, I’m really, really happy each time only $25 dollars is taken out of my account.
Here’s the thing, I side hustled my way out the Verizon contract, side hustled to purchase the phone, and it was worth the effort. I bought theΒ $299 Moto X smartphone with Unlimited Data, Talk & Text. Plans starting at only $5/month. No Contract.
My thoughts on Republic Wireless so far:
- I currently use the $25 dollar a month plan. I don’t notice any difference from my Verizon service
- I run a number of Apps on my phone and things are fine: Facebook, WhatsApp, Starbucks, SKYPE, Eventbrite, Twitter, My Fitness Pal, Shazaam, Google Voice, and Facebook Messenger (the floating head freaks me out though)
- When I’m in Starbucks and the phone connects to Starbuck’s wireless I have to remember to open a webpage and click on it in order to use my internet options-1st World Problem
- San Diego gets fantastic reception and I’m convinced that San Diego has extensive Sprint coverage. Denver’s Sprint Coverage is not as ideal (Boulder’s is awful and I seem to lose the signal a lot more in Boulder)
- Google Voice-I’m able to receive my Google Voice text messages.
- Sometimes it doesn’t like other phones. Doesn’t happen often, but it hasn’t played well on occasions. This also happened when I had my Verizon phone.
- The battery is pretty good!
Basically, I am absolutely pleased with my experience dealing with Republic Wireless and I would absolutely recommend this service if:
- You are in an area with 3G or 4G Spring Coverage (4G would be better)
- Are in a major metropolitan area (with lots of of wifi ports)
- Love saving money!
- Aren’t super obsessed about your phone
- Like a low key experience dealing with your phone company.
- Your contract is about to expire. I was fed up and side hustled my way out of my Verizon contract. That was a lot of side hustling!
I have had a really positive experience with Republic Wireless and will continue using the service.

ARGH I lost my initial comment π In short, I can’t use Republic yet as both my DH and I travel outside of the US for work so we need very reliable data/phone service.

I have been using the Clean Talk spam filter and whenever it is set to filter comments-it even EATS the legitimate ones! I’m sorry about that π I don’t use phones when I leave the country (as I am on vacay) so it is not issue for me. I just revert to Facetime/Skype. And a HUGE thank you for letting me know about the problem π

I have heard a lot about Republic Wireless. I believe Holly from Club Thrifty has talked about it before and she raves about it. Right now I pay less than $50 for a full service plan and have no complaints–well, for the most part. I have Metro PCS and coverage can def. be an issue.

I love it!! Cell phones are what they are. As long as I am getting my calls-I’m good. I also have: Google Voice, Skype, and Facetime.

I was about to when I found out I could get an iPhone plan for $65 to take care of all my needs (i have at&t)β¦so even though it’s not $25, at least it’s not the $95 I was paying. I can live with it for now. It does seem like a pretty good alternative option though.

I think that’s a great plan for an iPhone! As long as you’re not paying $100+ a month (with discount) like I was-you’re doing good. I have to admit that my service was fantastic in San Diego maybe even better than my experience in Denver. However, for $25 I’m not too fussed.

I have Republic Wireless too. I don’t understand why people pay so much for service when there are cheap options like RW out there!

Honestly Holly, it just doesn’t make sense. And the more I discover that I can have the exact same things: phone service/travel/food for a fraction of the price it’s a no-brainer, I’m taking advantage of those money saving opportunities.

I am so over sprint. My bill is around $85 a month and thats too high! I have another year on my contract but it’s time to start being wiser and looking into another carrier. Did you look at others before deciding to go Republic? i would love to hear about more options.
Michelle says
I was pretty set on Republic due to the other reviews that I’d read. The big issue was the Sprint coverage as it ports off of Spring and WiFi. Denver’s Sprint coverage is ok. I’d had Cricket before and they were fine too. But, there are so many options now that I think you should start with which low cost carrier has the best coverage in your area.

I live in San Diego too and I just ordered my Moto X (2nd gen) from Moto Maker for Republic Wireless. I’m excited and hope this really works out for me and my wallet!

I had fantastic reception in San Diego!! I live in Denver so it’s not as good but I don’t really use my phone a lot. I hope you’re happy with the service!!
