For those of you who are new to my blog, I’m from Colorado. And, unless you’ve been living in a cave for the past couple of years you know that the majority of citizens in the state of Colorado passed the most liberal marijuana law in the world. Not to mention that I have seen a lot of people around the city holding those portable digital vaporizers (Check out http://www.davincivaporizer.
Yep, the world.
Because for some reason Colorado likes to go big. For a square state in the middle of the country that is actually the West (not the Mid-West) you would think we would be happy to be boring…but, we seem to embrace being anything but boring.
So why does “just saying no” costs me money?
Because there are a lot of money making opportunities that I could be taking advantage of but I’m not…because I just am not a pot smoker and I find the whole thing super boring. You have to understand that there are a ton of money making opportunities that are associated with the marijuana industry.
In fact, there is a huge festival/conference called the Cannabis Cup on 4/20. When I say huge, I mean huge. There have been calls for Brand Ambassadors, show models, and every type of supportive staff member that you would need to run a big a@@ event such as this one.
The pot industry in Colorado is a cash business that is growing at such a fast rate that we may receive tax refunds because we have a balanced budget amendment and the state has potentially received too much money in taxes.
I cannot ethically support the pot industry a number of reasons and I will share those reasons with you now.
- I Don’t Smoke-I am not interested in smoking anything. It stinks and is bad for your skin. Also, I already snack a lot and don’t need to be dealing with the munchies.
- Banking Problems-The cash can’t flow through FDIC insured banks. That’s basically any bank. It is a cash heavy industry and any money that I earned I wouldn’t legally be able to deposit the money into my regular bank accounts. This is such a huge problem that they are hoping to start a credit union for pot industry cash. I don’t wan’t to deal with this type of issue.
- Umm, Pot is still Illegal-The Feds still consider pot to be an illegal substance. I go with the flow in terms of supporting what my fellow citizens have voted on. But honestly, pot is illegal. Let’s be clear! I do think that this will change in the next 5-10 years, but I don’t want to be connected with the industry until that’s cleared up.
- Stoned People Are So Boring-I have been around enough stoned people that I can say for the most part they are adorably boring. I can’t imagine smoking up all the time after the age of 23. I would rather hike, bike, snowboard, golf, travel, read, talk to friends and just have a glass of wine or a mixed drink and keep it easy.
It is hard because there is so much money that can be made in the industry but I think it’s important to stay true to what you feel is right for yourself. Likewise, if you support the industry and feel comfortable working in it I would say go for it-if it’s in line with your belief systems.

I will leave you with this public service commercial that has to be shown because people are still not understanding that with great freedom comes great responsibility.

I’ve had a (very) few people contact me to “collaborate” on my blog – but it’s obvious that they have no clue what I’m about. I’m not going to support gambling. Don’t want posts about the financial impact of divorce. That sort of thing. I have no problem saying no, because it’s just not even an option in my book.

I think that it’s very important for people to be clear about what is morally/ethically right for them. I just have no interest in dealing with the pot industry. It is making my state and a lot of people money-but, there are some downsides to this freedom that we have in my state. Those downsides are a completely different post!

I know alot of people are going to try to ride the pot money train all the way to the bank, but its something I plan on staying away from. I have an uncle who smoked pot his whole life and by the time he was 50 the lights were off. I could think of a million other things I could be doing that that. My sister tried to talk me into buying penny stock, but it just didn’t feel right. Way too soon.

There are people that I’ve known for years who smoke and honestly they are sweet people. They are also broke a lot, seem to have trouble working, and just are a bit boring. LOL! I am not going to touch anything that is related to the industry in my state. We will have another president soon and you never know how they will deal with the industry.

This is good. As a former weed-head and I am so glad this habit has not carried over into adulthood. It’s expensive and the people I know who still smoke regularly are pretty clueless when it comes to manners and not saying inappropriate things (high or not.) Plus, not trying to get locked up, LOL.

I will say that the occasional recreational smoker is fairly harmless. But, I’m seeing the everyday smoker. Those people are just lost…and kind of boring as all they can talk about is the pot industry.

Hehe Aja I can’t imagine you to be a regularly partaker of the pot. Michelle, maybe you can start a non FDIC insured bank biz and solve all the cannabis banking woes. LOL! If I had to say no to an entire industry it might be porn I guess or maybe cheese. I’m just saying…Ha!

I am a little surprised myself Aja-I just can’t imagine it either! No way Toni would I ever think of starting a non-FDIC bank for the cannabis biz. The security costs alone would be daunting. They are actually looking at opening up a credit union because there seems to be a loophole in the Colorado Constitution. Don’t want to touch this!

your pot is my porn. lol! Seriously I could make a ton of money editing those kinds of videos and know friends who have but yuck!

LOL!! Jeez people. Vice does make money but I have enough issues and don’t need to add to my list.

Oh gosh, this is a tough one. I really don´t like to touch politics on the blogosphere, but I will say this. I am definitely not in favor of the government telling me what I can and can´t put in my body (my body, my choice, and all that)–but I can imagine how hard it must be to see that there is a ton of financial opportunity out there that you just don´t want to be a part of. I mean, I guess it´s like any industry that you just fundamentally disagree with. For me, it´s pharmaceutical sales. A lot of my peers have gone into that field, and made A TON of cash, but I have serious moral reservations about “marketing” and using “salesmanship” to get a doctor to prescribe a certain drug. Doctors should be making those decisions based on what´s best for the patient, not based on the kickback those salespeople can offer. But I digress. I´m just saying, I get it.

I think that with great freedoms come great responsibilities. So, if people want to smoke up-that’s their choice. BUT, it’s still illegal, it’s a 100% cash business which means it’s dangerous (people are paying a lot for security), and things could change with a new president. I just say no and continue to avoid it. But, I am losing out on a lot of money next weekend. A LOT.

Several people suggested to me that I should buy a fast food restaurant that was up for sale in my town…. no deal. It’s people’s choice to eat that stuff, sure, but I don’t want to be an enabler and I am all about good, healthy food.

You are a foodie. That would be a sacrilege.
