Mama and calf-sculptures outside of the Denver Art Museum (DAM)
When my parents married my dad went directly into the military. For the first 6 1/2 years of my life we moved to different posts in the way that military families do. California (was born there), Michigan, Illinois, Okinawa (Japan), and then to Colorado. Don’t insult me and say that I’m from Cali because I was born there. We were there for 6 months and as I couldn’t speak, walk, talk, or even wipe my butt-the time in California doesn’t count. I do remember some of the Japan years. But my life really began when we moved to Colorado-because I could remember everything and Colorado basically is where I have lived for basically my entire life.
Where I go hiking during my lunch hour…nice!
When we first moved to Denver it was basically a Cow Town. Really. The reputation was well deserved and the people really didn’t give a sh$t about being called a Cow Town. Then, we moved to Boulder, a well-to-do university town with real hippies at the time. We weren’t well-to-do, but I did benefit from living there…even though we didn’t have a ton of money. It was a wonderful place to grow up and I had a fairly idyllic childhood. I went to camp, I learned to ride horses, I saw the mountains everyday, I played in the creek-catching garter snakes and feeding them grass. I rode my bike for hours in circles with my friends and just had a great time being a kid.
After junior high, we moved back to Denver and I completed my high school studies in Denver. Again, things weren’t perfect but life was pretty good.
Not everyone loves where they grew up-but I do! I love the crazy weather, the crazy people, and the western attitude. I watching how much our state has changed and grown in my lifetime. It is amazing to me to see how our elected leaders and citizens have worked together to craft a dynamic vision of our state that is coming to fruition. We now have direct flights to: Tokyo, London, Frankfurt, and Rekyjavik to name a few cities.
We have the second largest theater complex in the United States and I have been able to see the following shows: The Book of Mormon, The Whale, The Doyle and Debbie Show, The Blue Man Group, Wicked, Warhorse, American Idiot, Bring it On, and the Addams Family. We having hot springs, sand dunes, ski resorts, rafting, zip lines, camping, and an up and coming Film Festival. We even have Chinese Massage and Russian Bath Houses. You should try them sometime! We are #1 for fitness (usually), have 300+ days of sunshine a year, and 60,000 people attended FinCon ComiCon (oops!) this year. We love running from Zombies, running through mud, and running through chalk powder. We really love running.
We love any reason to have fun, to exercise, to exercise while having fun. Food has become fantastic and there are so many amazing places to eat that I have a hard to time deciding where to go out. Tag Raw Bar, Linger, Root Down, Stueben’s, Beatrice and Woodsley, Most Pho places on Federal, Korean B.B.Q. in Aurora, and amazing burgers. The Food trucks are pretty good too.
Apparently t.v. shows love Coloradans too. We are on reality t.v. all the time. From the Amazing Race, The Bachelor, America’s Next Top Model, and America’s Got Talent you can’t get enough of us.
Of course there are sh$ty things…but, I don’t want to focus on that as every place has crappy stuff and crappy people.
I will write posts from time to time talking about some of the 724 reasons why I love Colorado. By the way 724 isn’t random it’s a combination of July 24th-MY BIRTHDAY LOL!! Have a great weekend!
