Women wear wigs for many reasons. Those reasons can range from: fighting hair loss, combating hair boredom, and even religion. Regardless of your reason, wigs can be a lot of fun if you pick the right one. For me, I struggled with hair loss due to stress and it was so upsetting. I still wanted to look my best and wigs were a great way to do that. But, I was going broke buying expensive wigs throughout the year. Then, my friend Sandy Smith from Yes I am Cheap, told me about her love affair with synthetic wigs. Living in NYC, she had better access to stores that provided hair products/tools/and wigs for women of color. I soon was saving hundreds of dollars on hair each year while having the ability to inexpensively change my look throughout the year. Check out the following inexpensive and real looking wigs that you can pick up on Amazon today! By the way, YES, there are a TON of white women wearing wigs as well, including those mentioned below. Sometimes you just need a hair break.

How to ROCK Your Wigs
The following are some tips that will help you better rock your wigs.
- Own your style-you know the styles that you like and what is a good fit for your face. Trust your gut.
- Youtube Reviews for the win! Go to YouTube and type in the name of the wig that you’re looking to purchase. It’s likely that a wig reviewer/lifestyle vlogger has done a review AND shown how she slayed the wig that you’re looking to purchase. These videos are gold for those of us who have no idea what we’re doing.
- Know the lingo-There is a vocabulary behind wig wearing and it’s helpful to know what people are talking about so you know what to look for.
- Hair combs–Many wigs have tiny combs inside them to keep the wig from moving around. If your wig doesn’t have them, you can sew them into the cap.
- Dome Style Wig cap-it’s the cap that the hair has been attached to. Typically reviewers will talk about the SIZE of the cap. If it’s going to fit people with bigger/smaller heads
- Plucking-It took me forever to figure this one out. Basically, a lot of the parts on wigs look too uniform to be real human hair. Basically, the part will give your secret away. Plucking your part (pulling hair out to make it look uneven) is a trick that many people use to make the wig look more real.
- Bleaching the knots-Sometimes if you look closely enough, you can see the actual mesh that the wig hair is attached to. Many people will “bleach the knots” so that you can no longer see the mesh grid and it blends in with your scalp.
- Wig cap-Basically, it’s a stocking cap LOL!
- Wig Head-Your wig needs to hang out somewhere, the wig head is where!
- Hair Textures-Basically, wigs mimic the textures of human hair. When looking you can will see the following textures mentioned (Not limited to)
- Afro/natural
- Human hair
- Synthetic
- Peruvian
- Brazilian
- Wet and Wavy
- Curly
- Yaki
- Malaysian
- Deep wave
- Cost-How much are you spending on hair, hair related services, and products during typical year? Now that I’ spend on average $35 a wig, I can splash out once a year on a well constructed human hair wig. Typically, I would do that on Black Friday when they go on sale.
- African American women reportedly spend 9 times more on hair related activities/services/etc.
