After blogging for eight years, I’ve made PLENTY of mistakes. Seriously, so many damn mistakes. And, for those of you who are relatively new to blogging, or have been in the trenches for a couple of years you’re probably trying to avoid as many mistakes as possible. There was a point when I was running three different blogging concepts and none of them were doing well or growing. What was happening was an extreme case of burnout. So, I thought I would share 7 blogging mistakes to avoid as you move forward in your blogging journey.

Mistake #1
- Lack of clarity! In fact, I’m still tightening this up on my Michelle is Money Hungry website. In it’s current iteration it’s a personal finance website with a focus on designing your best life through online entrepreneurship and income growth. But, in order for that to be CLEAR, I had to also create one or two taglines where I share what Michelle is Money Hungry is all about. “Helping people make money selling what they know.” That’s the current tagline for the podcast and when I’m making comments on other podcasts about what I’m doing.
Mistake #2
- Not knowing your avatar-In the past, I would have written this as “your blog avatar” but online content creators are positioned in a lot of different places online. My avatar is the following:
- Typically a woman
- Who wants lifestyle flexibility and freedom
- Wants to earn more money selling her own expertise
- Is looking to be of service to communities that she’s developing and growing.
- Values fitness and self-care
- Values travel
- Is on a financial journey
Mistake #3
- Inconsistency-Blogging consistency can be so dang hard because of all of the distractions. And, if you add a podcast or vlog into the mix, you’ve create an even more complicated scenario. Here’s the thing:
- If you’re trying to build your platform
- Grow your opt-ins
- Make money
- Get people to believe that you’re going to show up….you have to be consistent.
- Batch your work. Just sit in the chair and write as much as you possibly can and then schedule it so that you can focus on marketing your content versus creating it at the last minute.
Mistake #4
- Not creating systems and relying on your memory for all of the things you’re trying to do with each blog post. Currently, each of my posts require the following components:
- Opt-ins
- Affiliate links
- Backlinks to other posts on my website
- Resources
- Images
- SEO optimization
- A minimum word count per post
- Disclaimer/disclosure
- Hidden Pins
- Tag the correct categories
- Edit the blog snippet
- Not having systems or a blog “playbook” means that every single time I write a post I forget something important. Every.single.time.
Mistake #5
- Forgetting about your avatar’s needs when writing your posts.
Mistake #6
- Not optimizing your blog post urls so that they are easily searchable. What in the heck do I mean? Your blog posts URL are searchable in addition to the headings within the blog content, key words, and even the images. I didn’t even think about optimizing the urls until freaking 2019.
Mistake #7
- Not being aware when you’ve become unrelatable to your readers.
