Gift giving fills some people with fear and trepidation. What if they get it wrong? What if their loved one looks at the photo mug and matching calendar with disdain? Well I’m here to give you some tips on how to give kick-ass gifts to your loved that will have them asking “How did you know I would like that?”
Step #1
- Ask! just ask them what they want. But, do it several months in advance so that they will forget the original conversation. Write down what they said or put it in your cell phone with an alert about a week out so that you don’t forget to get the gift
Step #2
- Don’t wait till the last minute! Last minute gift giving is a strategy that is full of land mines. You will almost always pick THE WRONG THING! Anxiety breeds panic and panic equals picking out something crazy. Your person will notice right away when you hand over a toaster oven or waffle maker. They might also notice the slightly crazed look in your eye as you handover the gift.
Some Gift Ideas
- Do something active! If you’re loved one enjoys rock climbing and is fairly active and isn’t a complete klutz, then schedule a rock climbing intermediate or advance skills lesson to help them feel like Spiderman/woman. Or, schedule a lesson to do learn a new activity together. Don’t feel like jumping out of a plane, but want an experience mimicking that? Schedule an indoor Skydiving lesson.
- Visit a part of your state that you’ve never visited. Stay overnight at a bed and breakfast to keep the cost low.
- Create some coupons for your loved one to redeem at a later date. For example: a coupon for a babysitting night, foot massage, or to run an errand that they loathe.
If you’re unable to schedule an activity outside of the home for whatever reason make something! Some ideas include:
- Making Limoncello-check out the video below
Do the old standby and make a nice homemade meal. Sometimes doing something simple is the best approach. But, you should try to make the Molten Chocolate Lava cake to elevate the meal to Rock Start status.
Do the thing that your loved one always mentions that they would love to do. Caution! This requires you to listen carefully to what your loved one talks about. This process has to start early. You can’t try to listen to your loved one a couple of days before giving the gift and hope you discover your loved one’s heart’s desire. Also don’t give a gift that you would love to receive. Give a gift that your person would want! This advice is especially important for people who don’t receive or give gifts often.
If you don’t know how to cook-maybe this is not the time to learn!
Step #3
Have your gift wrapped nicely! It is a small thing, but a detail worth remembering. A well wrapped gift shows that there was time and effort put into the gift (if the gift can be wrapped)
Finally, enjoy the process of gift giving. Focus on how you’re about to make your loved one happy. Part of why I love giving gifts is I enjoy thinking about how happy the recipient will upon receipt of their gift. Don’t over think the process, have fun with it.
