One of the most fascinating things that I’ve noticed in the course of putting myself “out there” is that perfectionism and fear is keeping a lot of amazing people from starting and sharing their artistic and creative vision. Yep, that was long sentence. But, seriously, when it comes to blogging, vlogging, podcasting, people…just…won’t…start. And, I’m here to tell you-don’t let perfectionism stop you from starting your future blog (or, creative project).
*In order for me to support my blogging activities, I may receive monetary compensation or other types of remuneration for my endorsement, recommendation, testimonial and/or link to any products or services from this blog. Please read my disclosure here.*
Too Much Information
Is also a big problem with all of these creative endeavors. Wannabe creatives know that it’s possible to make money blogging, podcast, or vlogging. The is an intentionality in approaching these creative pursuits that just wasn’t there when I started my creativepreneur journey. Because, I wasn’t a creativepreneur-I was a blogger, sharing a story, one post at a time.
In the beginning of my blogging journey my posts were painful. Awkwardly written, rushed, and a bit apologetic. As if I was afraid to own my voice. In fact, I hadn’t even developed my blog’s voice, or even had a clue about who I was writing for. My initial goal was to start blogging and hope that my story would resonate with someone. Seriously, that was about it.
Was I intimidated to start? Heck yeah, I was. I had the same questions that every new creative has:
- Is my creative vision worth sharing?
- Who’s going to read what I’m writing?
- Am I making a difference?
- What’s the point of what I’m doing?
In fact, I’m sure I had other doubts and fears that I struggled with internally. I would quit and start both this blog and my Colorado blog several times. Each time I started again, I remembered what didn’t work the last time and avoided making those mistakes.
Avoid Perfectionism
It will keep you from putting yourself out there. Every single successful creative that you’re seeing making “bank” each month started at zero…just like you. The majority with boring blog posts and weird blog formatting. Their blog images were probably awkward and the slick blog that you’re used to interacting with probably took years to build and grow.
You have to embrace the awkward teen years of your creative projects. It’s a rite of passage. Then, one day you’re like, I’ve got a handle on this thing. It’s now time to make some money.
Then, you start asking yourself the following questions:
- How do I monetize with integrity?
- Will I lose the soul of my project when I start making money?
- Who am I helping with my project to justify making money? Who am I of service to?
In fact, you will find that almost every single person that you’re a fan of started with:
- Horrible posts
- Youtube videos with bad lighting
- Said “um” and “like” a billion times during a podcast interview
No one needs you to be perfect. As a reader of lots of blogs-I love the journey that people are on. And, if they were perfect, I wouldn’t be able to relate to them. You don’t need to be perfect-you just need to start.
Also, focusing on the perfect look, photos, etc. will keep you from being creative. Some of the best ideas are generated from mistakes. Make mistakes and then make adjustments. But, if you feel like you need some guidance there is a tool that I would like to suggest for you.
The Elite Blog Academy
Will help you navigate through those questions. At this point in my blogging career I’ve decided to monetize my creative projects. BUT, that was after paying thousands:
- To educate myself
- Attend conferences
- And, for business expenses
I decided to purchase EBA several years ago and it helped me create a solid foundation with my blog before I monetized it. I absolutely love EBA because it has a ton of free resources that you can check out before making the leap to purchasing the course. I’ve even written how you can afford the course HERE.
In fact, Ruth Soukup, who created this course also wrote the following book:
I’ve also earned money back as an affiliate of the course. Curious about EBA? Get your free guide below!
Want to Start a Blog?
I love blogging! It has been an incredible experience, transformed my life, and connected me with a ton of amazing people. Blogging is a pretty cheap activity and I recommend hosting your blog with Siteground. Many bloggers have begun leaving HostGator and BlueHost and moving to Siteground. Myself included! Read why I’m leaving HostGator and BlueHost (I have 2 blogs one on each hosting platform) and moving to Siteground. If you’re a new blogger Siteground will cost around $3.95 a month (depending on the size of your audience). They have great customer service and tutorials on how to host your new WordPress blog on Siteground.
