*2/1/2016 Girl Gone Frugal has changed its name to
The D.O.N.E. Society. Same content-different name.*
I decided to start reaching out to people that I didn’t know who were living their “dream life.” I literally spent time Googling the following: people living their dream life. In the course of doing that I discovered Ultra Romance aka J. Poppi. If you Google him you’ll find a number of different articles discussing his life including the Business Insider article that initially introduced him to me. He also has an EPIC Instagram feed (umm, you might see his cute bootie. Just saying)
So, I decided to reach out to him and I was super amazed that he connected with me and I am so glad that he did. I found him charming, super interesting, and an incredibly deep thinker. I felt after talking to him that the articles that share his story don’t really do him justice. He has perfected an incredible way of life that allows him to ride his bike around for 6 months and then he works for six months out of the year.
He’s Living His Dream
Technical! Before we get started: I still have some slightly high pitched sound-SORRY. But, I am waiting to use the $200 Amazon Gift Card that I won the other week to purchase podcast equipment. Hey-I’m super frugal. Until then sound quality will be a little iffy. It doesn’t matter. What J. Poppi shares is priceless. So, without further delay enjoy Girl Gone Frugal Podcast Episode 7!

Word for the Podcast: Suave (uhh, Spanish?) we had some fun with that.
First 12 Minutes
- We spend the first 12 minutes getting to know the “man behind the myth.”
- He begins to go against the grain and craft his life through strategic focus and embracing the love of cycling.
- What we have in common (am sharing a post about this on Wednesday)
- Who was he in high school?
- He once enjoyed listening to Bell Biv Devoe?! This cracks me up for some reason
The Final 20 Minutes-Why I’m Interviewing J. Poppi
- We get to the heart of the matter and why this interview will help you with your dream life.
- The process of eliminating stressors…apparently sleep is almost better than sex.
- He did have debt-what he did about it.
- The process that he used to work towards the life he wanted.
- Find the hook up.
- What J. Poppi pays for in terms of personal expenses.
- The “hook up.”
- How his long-term love and passion for biking has paid off in his life style. The takeaway that I get from this is to focus on your passion.
- Making strategic choices.
- The things that keep you tied down and what you should do about them.
- Living the life he wants.
- I ask him to imagine being a guy with ties such as a home/family/ and a car and how that guy could approach crafting his dream life?
- His advice which includes assessing life and happiness goals.
- The discovery that goals usually aren’t connected to money.
- Focus on family and health (he surprises me a little bit at this point) in a good way.
- How his friends and family react to his choices and the gift that his family gave him that helps him feel comfortable as he travels this life path.
- The problem of too many choices.
- I ask about his 60,000 follower Instagram feed…when he’s not really into technology.
- How he used the hook up to achieve that goal.
- I ask about how he will approach this lifestyle as he ages and I’m struck by how J. Poppi maintains a sense of wonder about life in general and enjoys each new year.
- I get in his personal business and ask if he wants a family?
- Going with the flow.
