I haven’t gone to the grocery store since September 3, 2012. I have to admit each time I do the No Grocery Shop challenge I get a rush. I did go to the Farmer’s Market today to pick up some fresh vegetables and fruit for $16. I also bought pistachios from Kmart. But, compared to my usual two grocery stops a week averaging around $50-$80 I am doing great! I think that I will try for seven weeks this time. So far the eating has been pretty tasty. I am sure that I have a food obsession. I love eating it, cooking it for other people, buying it, thinking about recipes, discovering great restaurants, taking pictures of it when I go somewhere great, hanging out at grocery stores/markets in other countries, looking at recipes, and pictures of food. So, when I say that the eating is good, this is from a food obsessive’s point of view. I love this challenge because (as mentioned before) it seems to really freak people out. But, when you really think about it isn’t this how people used to do it? They would eat fresh, then have the harvest. Then, throughout the winter they would eat the pickled and preserved foods that they stocked up on during the harvest. How did we lose this skill of eating what is in our pantry in a creative way without sacrificing quality in taste and quality of lifestyle? Why do we stock up as if we’re preparing for the Zombie Apocalypse? When did we lose our relationship with food??

Wow! I’m very impressed with your grocery shop challenge. When I was younger, I used to limit myself to only spend a certain amount of money gor groceries and since my income is about double what it used to be, I let myself become way too relaxed about it. Also, I love with roommates now so it’s become a bit different. I need to re-evaluate this and try to figure out ways to cut costs and save money. Thanks for the inspiration!

Thanks! The first time I did this I think it was for Non-Religious Lent. I love the celebration of Lent (but I’m not Catholic :), so I gave up grocery shopping and I think shopping for clothes. The first time was the hardest and actually the clothes were harder than the food because my place is so stocked up (with good food). I actually had what would be considered withdrawal symptoms from not clothing shopping and a high level of anxiety that there was some fashion that I was missing out on. I will be issuing a no grocery shop challenge probably in January. Will keep you posted.

Linda, it’s almost a compulsion to buy more. I say this because I totally get where your family if coming from. When I get married I want a deep freezer. Then-it’s ON! I would put a side of beef in there..the possibilities are endless. Last night’s menu: lobster tail meat. fresh garlic, ginger, and pasta in a butter sauce. Hehe!
