I really enjoy watching sports. I was a cheerleader for 6 years and come from the great sports town of Denver, Colorado. We are also home to the Colorado Rapids professional soccer team. I’ve also had the amazing opportunity to watch soccer games in Europe and South America (Boca Juniors anyone?) so I have experienced soccer hooligans and the intensity of international soccer (futbol) love.
Why do I mention this? Because unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past week or so you would know that the World Cup is happening and the Americans actually showed up. We are late to the soccer party. We have been so distracted with: American Football, Baseball, Basketball, and Hockey that soccer had to jostle its way into a small part of our hearts. But like a weed even through our benign neglect the passion for the game grew.
I watch soccer for the tactical playing. Really.

I love that this sport encourages: teamwork, drama, and great physical conditioning. The players are using tactics, faking injuries, and running like crazy for 90 minutes…plus an additional 5 minutes at the end. Americans finally, finally feel the obsessive passion that soccer fans all over the world feel when they watch the game.

The Americans are doing shockingly well. We’re not starting a war, using politics, or even money to piss people off. It’s just a group of guys playing a game that they obsessively love. The Americans are like the late arrivals at the high school party. They showed up late not knowing what to expect. They hung out at the by the back wall drank a beer and started tapping their shoes. Then, they couldn’t resist the urge. They got on the floor and started twerking. Now-it’s a real World Cup Party.
As our guys prepare for the HUGE game on Thursday morning against Germany I feel such an amazing sense of pride for our team. We’ve needed something positive after so many years of crap. We finally have something to stand behind that is simple to support. It’s just us against the proverbial “them.” We are the underdog and it has been a long time since we’ve been in that position-for anything. AND IT’S GREAT!!
Let’s Do This Thing!

More so than prior years, I’ve really enjoyed watching the world cup. We went to a bar to watch the US match on Sunday and I was surprised to see how many people were there watching. It’s great to see the sport catching on finally!
