So, a few weeks ago I mentioned that I almost fell for a pretty well orchestrated scam on Craigslist. Check out the previous post: James Phillip tried to scam me. This week I am writing a follow-up to that post. Mr. Phillip decided to get in touch with me again.
Conversation Continued:
**I have already realized it’s a scam and am trying to closet the conversation gracefully without alerting him to the fact that I know what’s going on***

Dear Mr. Phillip,
I accepted a different part-time job and won’t be working for you. DO NOT send me a check. If you do, it will be voided and cut in half and returned to sender.
All the best,

MY REPLY-Because at this point I’m basically sick of this shit.
Mr. Phillip,
Stop emailing me. I have marked this email as spam. I won’t deposit the check and will shred it/tear it up/write void on it/cut it up/and burn it. Basically, I don’t want anything to do with this shady situation.
Thanks,
MJ
I haven’t heard from him since.
Getting ready to go postal on this check

OMG that’s crazy. What I can’t figure out is why it benefits him. What does he get out of it? This line cracked me up: “You should endeavour to check your email 2-3 times in a day to read updates from us.” You can always tell when some random person sitting in a hut in some 3rd world country is writing emails that they want to sound professional and it just screams SPAM! It’s sad that people still probably fall for this kind of thing all the time. Around here, what is big is an apartment which seems to good to be true. They can’t show you the place because they are out of the country on missionary work, but if you fill out the credit check they will approve you right away. Sad.

I think that I would have been contacted by someone in Colorado and asked for a majority of the extra money from the check. Also, the check would eventually bounce because those checks are almost always fraudulent. What an a@@hole! I feel badly for the people who fell for it.

Wow, he’s persistent, that’s for sure. Glad you finally got him out of your life. I’d missed the first part of the story, but went back to read it. I’ve had pretty good luck with craigslist (not for jobs, just for furniture and what not in the past). I guess the scammers have really taken hold of the site, sad!

I’ve had a pretty good experience with Craigslist and continue to use it. But, I will def. listen to my intuition when I begin to think the situation seems a little strange. I didn’t do that and almost got burned!

Very shady indeed. I hate these spams and worse, you really got a check.. Good call for tearing them apart. Hope you won’t hear from him again.
Michelle says
I honestly couldn’t believe that they would send the check. Especially after I had said several times that I wouldn’t cash it. So shady.
