Oh hey, Michelle is Money Hungry is back and I’m so excited that I took this break. In this episode I’m going to share why I decided to take a break from sharing regular content, some decisions I made about my business and who I serve and why I’m so excited to continue talking money moving forward.

Show Notes
- I’ve talked about personal finance since 2012 and as you could imagine, I’ve changed quite a bit since I began this project. Podcasting has become one of my favorite parts of my business for so many reasons:
- The connections that I’ve made
- The opportunity to share a different viewpoint about a topic
- I get to talk to people about a topics that I care about and reflect my person mission
- 2020 was a turning point for a number of reasons
- Behind the scenes I was really struggling with how to move forward with Michelle is Money Hungry. I didn’t want to quit this project, in fact, I was dealing with the opposite issue. I was trying to figure out how to move forward as a multi-passionate content creator. I had other content that I wanted to share that just didn’t feel right on this platform. I wanted to talk about Colorado and Digital Entrepreneurship and it was clear that I was resisting putting that content on Michelle is Money Hungry because deep down I just felt like I was speaking to different audiences.
- Basically, if I wanted to talk about personal finance I just wanted to talk about that and not let entrepreneurship take over this website. I’d seen it happen so many times on other people’s platforms and I didn’t want to do that here. As much as I wanted to make money with entrepreneurship content, I really felt like I was doing a disservice to a large number of people impacted financially by the COVID crisis. Many of those people being Black and brown women. Women who looked like or lived similar lives to mine.
- The other issue that I struggled with was that the content I was creating on Michelle is Money Hungry required me to react in the moment. All the time. All of the content that I worked on for the past couple of years required me to react in the moment and honestly that became really tiring to do over time. I just got tired of constantly being in reaction mode.
- At the end of March/beginning of April I decided to stop working on front facing projects for Michelle is Money Hungry. I stopped releasing podcast episodes, tweeting content and for awhile I even stopped working on post.
- Instead, I decided to focus on figuring out what is the purpose and point of this project for me and for the people listening to this show and reading the content on my website. And I wanted to rest mentally.
- To create a space for unique personal finance content focused on POC and Allied financial experiences.
- To have conversations about topics such as the $15 minimum wage, debt repayment, women and money, and other financial topics that lead with empathy
- To continue to be of service in the personal finance space as I grow my income.
- I also noticed that Michelle is Money Hungry was missing a lot of content answering the questions that I get asked all of the time. This content would be considered pillar content or evergreen content. This lack of content was also impacting my bottom line. Articles such as…
- How to Pay Off Debt
- What Side Hustles Should I Do
- How to Save
- You get the point. So, I’m answering those questions.
- I also want to share more nuanced conversations around topics such as:
- The $15 minimum wage debate
- How I love Slow FIRE and have become a little turned off by the concept of FIRE.
- This fluidity in content has also impacted my bottom line. Not gonna lie, I LOVE passive income. Seriously, I love it so much. It’s very hard to monetize a website like mine to generate sustainable passive income. My goal for the next couple of years is to grow my passive income.
- Taking this time off has created clarity on what is working, what isn’t working and where there is room for growth. I hope you enjoy these money driven conversations for the different voices in the financial space that I’m excited to share with you. I want it to be pretty freaking obvious that this is a personal finance brand and to be of service to those who are looking for content that is empathetic and helpful during a stressful time.
- If you’re a content creator and are wondering if this break has negatively impacted my business-it hasn’t. I earned the same amount of money, attracted a major new project, and my social media followers stayed the same. My website and podcast page views and downloads did dip, but it didn’t hurt my wallet or visibility. Why? Because of longevity and interviews, etc. on other people’s platforms.
- If you’re interested in hearing about creating a life driven business, then my new project The Brand Building Lab is where I will share all aspects of digital entrepreneurship and the amazing people in the space who are designing their best lives through online entrepreneurship. Go to https://brandbuildinglab.com to stay in the loop.
- It’s my hope that by separating this content I will be able to better serve people with the content that I’m creating. Let’s do this!
