The state of Colorado experienced rain that was called “Biblical” in nature. We basically received a year’s worth of rain in 2 or 3 days. On top of this Colorado is fairly dry and has been on fire since 2005. Basically, this wasn’t going to end well. Even though the news seems to be fixated on Boulder let me be clear the floods devastated the following areas: Aurora (on the eastern side of Denver), Boulder, Colorado Springs, Estes Park, Fort Collins, Greeley, Longmont, Lyons, Longmont, and the list goes on. This is a once in a generation flood event.
I haven’t gone to work since Wednesday because the roads were flooded and the highways were shut down. Bus service has been cancelled and roads are washed away. I’m very fortunate because I live in Denver so while we did have substantial rain amounts we did not experience the infrastructure damage of the cities listed above. It is highly likely that I won’t be working on Monday due to road conditions.
My hometown of Boulder is devastated. Fortunately it is a a community with a lot of resources and they have been anticipating a flood event like this one for awhile. They have the financial resources and a plan to take care of the city. It will take years to clean up and rebuild the buildings, roads, and businesses lost. I know of people that are hourly and aren’t able to work because their business is closed/cut off/ or gone.
I will be donating money to the Red Cross and other local charities that I will vet closely to make sure that my money is going to help people. I will also be giving money/grocery cards to people that I know who will need the help due to lost working hours.
Please send us your money. I’m not going to beat around the bush. This is the real deal. Find an organization that aligns with your values: Red Cross, food donations, anything that helps with rent assistance, kids, and animals. I am asking now before the next thing happens that diverts your attention from this disaster. Colorado will be dealing with the fall out from this situation for years to come.
We appreciate your help!
Then, we will get snow. Sigh.

It has been a very scary, depressing, intense time. I am very fortunate because I live in Denver. We did receive record amounts of rain but we only had minor flood damage. In my hometown (and where I work) of Boulder and a number of other towns they had either 100 year or 1000 year (yes One Thousand) flood events. I will be volunteering a lot to help with the clean up.

This is sad and we’ve recently had a lot of this in some of our Canadian cities this year. Wishing you the best!

The flooding in Alberta was horrible. It just seems like the weather patterns are getting more and more extreme. We are trying to keep positive and move forward. Thanks for the kind thoughts 🙂
