Tonya at Budget and the Beach wrote a great post this week where she asks us “How Bad Do You Want It?” In the post she talks about the challenge of weight loss and also the challenge of dealing with money issues as well. This post might be a mild rant.
Stop Talking-Get It DONE!
We should all feel like we’re being called out by her. Do you know what I mean? And she is right to ask us this question.
Are you the type of person who talks a lot about what you’re going to do? You’re going to start a new job, lose the weight, and find love this year…ahem.
Then, a year goes by, two years, and then five and you wonder where did the time go? In all of the planning, the sharing enthusiastically with your friends what you’re going to do, how you’re going to do it and when it’s going to be done, you look back and wonder why what you’ve dreamt of hasn’t happened yet.
Something always comes up, the flu, a debt to be repaid, a new relationship distracting you. Your friends’ enthusiasm for your dreams begins to wane and they move on doing the things that THEY talked about, dreamed off and worked towards during the time that you shared your hopes and dreams.
Talk is Cheap
Action is where it’s at. Waking up early, staying up late at night, having your goal in front of you with a focus that frightens others. You should be so laser focused that people begin to worry…just a little bit.
The transition between talk and action varies for most people because you have to address your fear of failing to met your goal. Who wants to be a failure?
No one.
The other question you should ask yourself is-who wants to be a big talker with no results in sight?
No one.
The path to action is littered with doubts, fears, and every other issue you could think of. When you decide to follow through these things will come up. It’s a given because you’re walking a different path than a lot of other people.
If you want to: travel the world, meet someone, lose weight, buy a house, or move your life forward DO SOMETHING. Take that one small step.
We are all tired of hearing people talk. I’m tired of hearing: Congress, The President, My Friends, My Colleagues, and most importantly MYSELF talking and not doing anything that moves me towards my goals. Don’t be that person who talks about what you’re going to do, what you dream of, and what you want. Be the person who gets it done.
It gets old. I don’t want to hear your excuses anymore. Because when you’re all talk and no action it takes away my belief in you and sadly it takes away your belief in yourself.
Go and sign up for Meetup.com and meet some people if you’re lonely. Go walk outside and get some steps in if you want to start losing weight, meditate if you need to get your mind right. If you want to change your job apply for 1 job a day. Everyday until you you get a new job.
If you want to work for yourself, pitch like you’re a baseball pitcher. Throw out pitches as often as you can until you start getting responses. Make a plan and stick to it. Don’t out think the plan, just put one foot in front of the other and trust yourself.
I know that we are tired, we’re overworked, over-scheduled, and stressed the hell out. Rally. I’m just as weary as you are so I’m speaking from experience. Rally.
Because I don’t want to hear about how your dreams didn’t come true in 5 years. I want to see all of your hard work come to fruition. I believe in you.
Now, get it done.

But it’s sooooo much easier to talk!!! 🙂 I’m reading a book about microresolutions right now. http://www.amazon.com/Small-Move-Big-Change-Microresolutions/dp/0670015342 Easier to do things if you can break it down… we only have a finite amount of willpower. I’m so bad about losing weight… you are so right about putting one foot in front of the other, literally!

I struggle with this because when I’m focused I get scary focused. It’s just that getting to that point of focus has been a struggle in last few years. Now, I’m in a good frame of mind despite myself! So, I’m running with this sense of urgency, synergy, and excitement and getting things done.

By the way thank you for the book suggestion! Will be reading that ASAP.

lol I hope I wasn’t calling people out too much! 🙂 It’s tough because we sometimes set goals, but along the way something might not be working, so we adjust. Is that the same thing as not following through with your actions? Hmmm, I don’t know. But I do think we each have those one or two things we talk about all the time which we want to change, but sometimes our actions don’t reflect that, so that’s where that question comes into play!

Tonya we need to be called out from from time to time to remind us that we have to “listen” to what we’re saying to ourself and to others. Then, I think we have to acknowledge how we’re roadblocking ourselves when we aren’t following through on our goals/dreams etc.

YES! ANYONE can talk up big game, but it’s the DOERS that actually get sh!t done!

As someone who has talked too much at different points in my life, nothing is more powerful than action.
