Reading is a serious passion. In fact it’s safe to say that I’m a nerd. This week’s book review is on “The Frugalista Files” by Natalie McNeal
Like romance novels, personal finance books connected to someone’s personal story keep me coming back for more. The only difference is there isn’t always a happily ever after like in romance books. Natalie McNeal’s book, The Frugalista Files, chronicles her experience becoming aware that she was in a rut and that at the heart of that rut were her finances. I connected with this book on many different levels. Why?
1.) She was dating a younger guy-and they broke up. Hey, I did that too!
2.) She had been working the same job…for EIGHT years, with no end in sight. Hey, I did that too!
3.) She enjoyed spending money on having fun (partly because she was single). Hey, I did (do) that too!
4.) She had some debts that were around so long it just didn’t make sense. Hey, I did that too!
You get the picture, we have a lot in common. Initially, I thought that she didn’t cut her expenses enough. But, in retrospect I think that was an unfair judgement as everyone has their own threshold on what’s comfortable for them. And, if I judged her on her choices without walking in her shoes, then I opened myself up to the same types of judgement. It is important to note that she started this journey in 2008 around the time that the Great Recession started. All in all, it’s a quick, light-hearted read, that is good for inspiration. I recommend this book.
