As many of you know, I love shopping at Goodwill. The specific store that I shop at in Denver I have named “Magical Goodwill” because it has the magical ability to have exactly what I’m looking for a the time.
Some examples include:
- White jacket from Express-check
- Cool bedspread-check
- Cocktail dress for Derby Party-check
You get the picture. So, I have spent a lot of time in that store. Soon I started to notice something over time and it caught me by surprise. There were new underwear and socks in the store all the time. Not vaguely new, like brand new and tags still on.
You Can Buy NEW Underwear At Goodwill?
I’ve had astonishing success purchasing new pieces of clothing but had always had a deep rooted fear, nervousness, and disdain surrounding the idea of purchasing undergarments at a thrift store.
But, what if you had to? What if your finances were stretched to the point where you had to keep all expenses substantially lower in all parts of your life. There is still dignity in the process.
I decided to ask about the new underwear and socks at the store. And here is what I found out.
- Goodwill Buys New-socks/undies/swimsuits/etc from big box retailers at a discount (probably at a deep discount or wholesale) By purchasing items in this way they are able to offer these items at a deep discount.
- Look at the ticket color–Find out what ticket color indicates what is a brand new item in your thrift store. The ticket color at mine is blue.
- Sometimes other types of new products from Target/Walmart will find their way to the thrift store. Things such as: diapers, body product, clothes, and the list goes on.
- Goodwill also has a shopper’s card where you get points as you shop. I received an additional 25% off on my birthday.
I know that there is a stigma with purchasing undergarments at a thrift store. But, I wanted to let people know that brand-new: underwear, socks, and swimsuits are at the store that I shop at every time that I go there. If you are hurting for money and need to replace clothing do not feel uncomfortable with buying these items from the thrift store. Find the right store for you and do what you have to do.
And no, I haven’t purchased those items there before (I have enough for a year) but if I needed to I would. My financial well-being comes first and pride comes before a fall.

Interesting. I might be OK with socks, but I’m particular about the type and brand of undies I buy, so it wouldn’t be so much that I’m nervous than it would be that they probably wouldn’t have what I’m looking for.

I go through socks like a five year old. So, I really like the idea of not investing too much on socks. I think there is a stigma with shopping at the thrift store and I have had such a fantastic experience shopping at the thrift store that I want to encourage other people to try (a good store) and save money too while being resource friendly.

Nice tips! I usually buy a pair of undies and go for cotton one.

Technically, I have such a ridiculous amount that it will be awhile before I add to the supply. But, there are nice BRAND NEW pairs at Magical Goodwill-I have lots of options.

We used to go thrift store shopping in high school. I would always be surprised to see what different things I could find there. Some outfits were practically brand new. I’m not sure if I would purchase bras, undies, or socks there, but if my finances were beyond stretched to the max, I would.

I would say that my wardrobe is running 65%-35% thrift store vs. new. At the store that I specifically go to there are always brand-new items with tags still on them. It is amazing to me what people give away.

Socks and underwear are the two things you can never have enough of, at least in my opinion. 🙂 I also feel they dictate when it is time to do laundry. When I am down to the last couple of pairs of either, then I know it’s time to throw a load in the washer.
The last time I bought underwear was at my local grocery store. They came out with their own brand of clothing that is super stylish and quite affordable. I love how I can go to the gym, get my groceries and buy clothes all in one place!
Due to crazy hours at work, I haven’t had a chance to check out my local thrift store. I should add that to my list of things to do on my week off.

I am in complete agreement with you and don’t understand people who say that they have only 20 pairs of both. Hmmm…I’m able to stretch out laundry because of how many pairs of socks and undies I have LOL! Just don’t stay too long in the thrift store if you go. Just blaze in and out so that you can actually enjoy the process 🙂
